THIS WEEK’S FOCUSED SCRIPTURE
“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:14-17 NIV.
THOUGHTS FROM JON
As Paul nears the end of his life, one of his last writings reiterates the necessity of God’s Word. He could have pointed them to anything in this moment. He could have tried to sum up everything he knew about God. He could have told them not to fear. He could have challenged them to have peace. He could have even reinforced the importance of salvation. However, Paul simply points them to the only thing that can sustain them for the long journey ahead of them, the Word of God.
We are no different. We are distracted, we are distraught, we tend to drift, and we too need to be reminded of the necessity of His Word in our daily lives. It is interesting that Paul challenges them to “continue in what you have learned.” No matter where you are in your walk with God, we are challenged to keep going. We can never reach the bottom of all that is to be found in God through His Holy scriptures. And then in verse 16, as if to combat any doubt or discouragement, Paul wants his reader to know the foundation on which the Word of God rests. That it is God who writes it with His own breath. He wants us to know that its uses in our daily lives are endless, and that it is given so that we may be equipped for every good work.
I can think of no better way for us to start 2019 than by being reminded of this truth. I pray that today will be the start of something that will forever change how you start each day. I pray that you would be mindful of the God-breathed Word that awaits your eyes and ears every day. May we read it and be equipped for every good work. God bless you in this endeavor.
