“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” — Hebrews 6:19 (NIV)
This past summer, I took the family on our annual vacation to the beach. We rented a pontoon boat with some friends and went out to cruise the bay. At one point, we pulled into some shallow water to let the kids play and threw the anchor overboard in the location we intended to stay. What we didn’t realize is that we had pulled into a very sandy area and there was nothing for the anchor to fasten on to. So as we played, slowly our boat was drifting away from where we intended to be.
What is an anchor? Simply put, an anchor is an agent of stability, an agent of security, and an agent of steadiness. Many times our lives can look similar to my boating experience. We throw out our anchor without making sure we are anchored into the one source that can assure our steadiness, security, and stability in life.
I am not sure what your life has looked like up to this point. Perhaps you have been throwing your anchor out in the hope of finding something secure to latch on to, yet finding yourself in a sandy area with no stability, security, or steadiness. Before you know it, you’ve drifted away from where you know you should be.
As we launch into 2016, I want to encourage you to anchor yourself to the One steady rock. The One who can get you through storms. To be anchored to something, you have to be in connection with it. Let me encourage you to connect with God during this time of fasting and prayer.
CALL TO ACTION
At least three times a day, remind yourself to stop what you’re doing and say a three to four minute prayer to God. If you have a busy schedule, set a reminder on your phone, or put it on your calendar like an appointment in your day. You will not regret it!
God will not always stop the storms of life that you find yourself in, but He is the rock in which you anchor to and ride out the storm in safety, stability, and hope. My prayer is that 2016 will be that year for you!
SCRIPTURE
“As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.’ Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.’” — 1 Peter 2:4-7 (NIV)
