If you are reading this, you have decided to embark on a 21-day journey of making room for God to do new things in you in 2017. I believe these next 21 days of fasting and praying will be a time of growth and expansion in your life. When we make room, God then has room to pour Himself into us. Many times, our lack of growth or progress is a capacity issue. If you plant an oak tree in a small container, it will sprout and grow. However, the size of the tree is limited by the capacity of the container it has been planted in. The potential of growth is there, but the space in which it is planted, limits its potential. Many times, we have experienced growth in our lives in the past. We remember times when we were passionate about the things of God; we felt alive and ready to conquer anything. Then we find ourselves in seasons of dryness. What if our lack of growth is simply a bi-product of us not making room for more growth to occur?
Fasting requires us to starve the flesh; the things we have become accustomed to and familiar with. As we make room for God, the things of God then become more clear and alive to us. Fasting is a process of making room for God to speak to us, lead us, and direct us.
Check out what Paul told the people of Corinth.
“Dear, dear Corinthians, I can’t tell you how much I long for you to enter this wide-open, spacious life. We didn’t fence you in. The smallness you feel comes from within you. Your lives aren’t small, but you’re living them in a small way. I’m speaking as plainly as I can and with great affection. Open up your lives. Live openly and expansively!” - 2 Corinthians 6:11-13 (MSG)
Paul is pleading with them to “make room.” God longs for us to experience the fullness of Him -- to live in this “wide-open” space intended for us. Let’s make room at the beginning of 2017 for God to move and fill us. We will not take 2017 as it comes; we will start our 2017 by seeking God on purpose and believing for His fullness to fill us all year long!
I am praying for you as you fast, pray, and seek. My prayer is that you encounter God in a new and fresh way.
In His Grip,
